About testosterone
Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group. Testosterone is primarily secreted in the testes of males and the ovaries of females, although small amounts are also secreted by the adrenal glands. It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. In both males and females, it plays key roles in health and well-being. Examples include enhanced libido, energy, immune function, and protection against osteoporosis.
What is androgel
AndroGel contains the male hormone testosterone. This gel is prescribed as replacement hormone therapy for men who have abnormally low testosterone levels. Other forms of testosterone replacement include tablets, skin patches or intramuscular injections. The gel provides more consistent levels of testosterone compared to injections and causes less skin irritation than patches. AndroGel is a clear, colorless gel that comes in a carton containing 30 single-use packets. Every morning, apply the gel to clean, dry skin on your shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen.
How to use androgel
Apply AndroGel once daily in the morning to clean, dry skin. Empty the entire contents of the package into a clean hand and apply to the shoulders and upper arms and/or the abdomen. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. Allow the application site to dry before dressing, then be sure to cover the treated area with clothing. Avoid bathing, showering, or swimming for 5 to 6 hours after application. Do not apply AndroGel to the genitals.
Side effects
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using topical AndroGel.

Who should not use androgel
Androgel must not be used by women or by those individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of its components, including individuals who are hypersensitive to testosterone that is chemically synthesized from soy. Pregnant women should avoid skin contact with androgel application sites in men. The active ingredient in androgel is testosterone. Testosterone may cause fetal harm.

Most important fact about androgel
Men using AndroGel must be careful to prevent contact between gel-covered areas and other people's skin. The drug can be transferred by skin-to-skin contact and can have harmful effects on women, especially pregnant women and their unborn babies. Women who touch AndroGel should wash with soap and water as soon as possible. Female partners of men who use AndroGel should contact a physician if they develop signs that the hormone is being transferred, such as acne, increased body hair, or other male sexual characteristics.
